IDVD 5.0.1 not compatible with Leopard

Can anyone help. Just upgraded to Leopard and Created a movie in Imovie HD but after hitting the IDVD icon i get message that tells me that IDVD will not work with the version of OSX (leopard)?
Is there a way round this? Have I got the latest update or is IDVD5 not compatible at all?

hello, sorry but I don't get it, I have a powerbook G4 with OS 10.5.6, IMOVIE 5.02 is working perfectly but when I try to open IDVD (5.0.1) I have the message saying that this version of the application is impossible to operate with this OSX version.

what can I do ? Is there any way to dowload another version of IDVD to fit with my imovie and mac.

thanks

Hi Pekaydub,

I too, upgraded to Leopard (10.5.2) and have also experienced a problem with iDVD 5.0.1 not being able to take a video from Final Cut Express 3.5

I didn’t get a message that iDVD will not work as you experienced. I simple dragged my FCE exported video over to the iDVD theme pane, and nothing happened!

I then rebooted my iMac G5 with my older Tiger 10.4.6, and this same FCE video worked fine with iDVD 5.0.1 Luckily I had preserved Tiger on an external bootable drive.

If possible, you should try reloading with Tiger to confirm that your older iMovie and iDVD versions are OK, as well as the SuperDrive burner.

I think the short answer to the post you started, is that you and I need to upgrade to iLife ’08 which contains a newer iDVD version that is compatible with Leopard. Unfortunately you can’t buy iDVD by itself, you have to buy the entire iLife suite.

Sometime upgrading to a newer OS creates more problems with older software; this is how Apple makes money! (“better is the enemy of good enough” !)

Thanks to everyone who posted a reply. Looks like I have to purchase Ilife 09? But I have my doubts as to the performance of Ilife 09 on my older mac. Going through the system requirements my Mac has the bare minimum and according to this it should run. Can anyone confirm or advise me if all the features will work?
Cheers

Hello again, Pekaydub

I think you will be OK upgrading to iLife ’09. For one thing, you are using Leopard 10.5.6 on your older iMac, which is the latest OS and is required by the iLife’09. I’m not speaking from experience because I have not myself done this upgrade.

One limitation of your pre-Intel iMacG5, …you won’t be able to import video into iMovie from the new hard drive camcorders, such as the AVCAD or memory stick versions. Mini DV tape cassette camcorders should import fine if that’s what you have been doing.

One thing you might already be aware of……..according to these Forums, Apple did not update iDVD in the suite iLife ’09 release. iDVD in iLife ’09 is the same iDVD as contained in iLife ’08.

Therefore if you are primarily interested in the latest iDVD upgrades, iLife ’08 will do fine, and I think there are some versions left on Amazon.com for a few dollars less. This is what I think I will do, because I’m not interested in iMovie (use Final Cut Express 3.5), nor interested in iWeb, but do use GarageBand once in a while.

I also have an older pre Intel iMacG5, and use Tiger and Leopard interchangeably from separate bootable drives. I like Tiger and my pre Intel machine for it’s ability to run Classic OS9; I have a lot of older files that depend on the Classic environment, such as Turbo Tax files, and Mac Draft files. Some day however, I’ll have to relegate this aging 3 year old G5 to the back shelf.

(An eligible iDVD application was not found in the location /Applications.) This is the message I get when I try to upgrade my idvd 5.0.1. to 6 or 7. When I installed 10.5.6 OS I lost my Idvd. I get the mess age (You cannot use this version of the application iDVD with this version of Mac OS X.) So far the OS upgrade has not been worth it. If I buy Ilife '08 or '09 will it install over 5.0.1 or will I get the (eligible iDVD application was not found in the location /Applications) . I use Imovie for my home movie projects transferring from a mini DV camera. This simply operation worked fine before the OS Leopard install. What is my best course of action. THANKS

But I have my doubts as to the performance of Ilife 09

I use both iMovie 06 and iMovie 09 (iMovie 06 about 90%, iMovie 09 about 10%).

iMovie 09 is a wonderful program assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble simple videos to share on the Internet.

There is a significant regresssion in quality of the image between iMovie 06 and 09.

I did a compare one day using the same clip burned to DVD from iMovie 06 and from iMovie 09.

The iMovie 06 clip looked like it came from the DV camera directly and the iMovie 09 clip looked worse. The difference is the single field processing used by iMovie 09 and the fact that it throws out every other horizontal line.

iMovie 06 has a similar editing approach that the more sophisticated Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro use. iMovie 09 is nothing like FCE or FCP, so if you you think there's any chance that you will ever upgrade to more sophisticated video editing you have to forget everything you learn with iMovie 09.

I have also experienced the situation to be no more able to use the IDVD 5 and related idvd files, after installing Leopard 10.5. According to other users it seams to be needed to purchase ilife 8 or ilife 9, as a part of the posible solution. Im very surprised that Apple and Ilife expects users to pay again for already existing applications. Why should I pay twice to be able to open my idvd files? Is this expected solution legal/fair for the users?

Yes, this was a really nasty surprise. Merely getting iDVD to launch again is a lousy reason to require a paid upgrade. I think Apple should do the right thing and offer a patch to iDVD 5.0.1 to users who have already paid them for Leopard AND paid them for iLife. Surely there are better reasons users might want to upgrade to the latest iDVD (via iLife): better performance?, more features? I mean, not everybody is able these dark days to just plunk down another seventy-nine bucks.

This is the sort of thing I'd imagine Microsoft or Quark doing—not Apple.

I am also having the same IDVD problem with OS X.5. I am thinking of following your suggestion of buying an ILife 08 for a few dollars less. If I get a I Life 08 would it install over my original Ilife that came with my machine? Or can it be installed on an external hard drive. An advice on how best to install so that I can revert to original position in case of problems would be appreciated. Thanks.
